Visitors enter the sites along the Railway Cutting, an artificial passageway dug into the limestone Sierra in the early 20th century. The Cutting exposed a huge trove of archaeo-palaeontological remains which defined three of Atapuerca's most important sites, now open to visitors: Sima del Elefante, Galería and Gran Dolina. During the annual digs in June and July, the tour follows the Lookout Trail, which runs parallel to the top of the railway cutting.
Please bear in mind that these sites are in a natural setting, with the corresponding hindrances to movement.
